Verified distribution of medication in the Intensive Care Department.

The hospital had established that there were often major discrepancies between the quantity of items supplied and the quantity invoiced for, due to a failure to record many of the medicines administered.
They wished to limit the financial losses through improved record-keeping and earlier invoicing.
A monitored storage and distribution system for anaesthetics and medication was installed for this purpose in the intensive care unit by VANAS MEDICAL.

• The Dispenser is a compact, modular system used for the storage and distribution of anaesthetics and medication.
• E-lock drawer cabinets were used for the storage and distribution of medication, transfusion solutions and also high-volume medical products.

"Before the introduction of the new system we invoiced for just 50% of the products supplied. A year later this figure had risen to 90%."

• 4 E-Lock cabinets.
• 1 refrigerator with electronic locking.


Every interaction between the user and the system happens via the touch screen.
Users log in with their names, followed by a fingerprint check.
Having selected the patient and the prescribing medical practitioner, the user is presented with a list of medications. Once the medication has been selected with the required quantity, the appropriate drawer (in the Dispenser or the E-Lock cabinet) will be unlocked.

In the case of the Dispenser the drawer will only open far enough for the requested quantity to be taken.

In the case of the E-lock Drawer Cabinet a complete drawer will be unlocked. Once the drawer has been closed again the quantity administered will be automatically passed on to the pharmacy's software package so that an invoice can be prepared. This represents a drastic simplification of the administrative process!

The prescriptions will be printed out "after the event" in the pharmacy, ready for signature by the relevant medical practitioner.
The switch to a computerised system went without a hitch for the users, and the anticipated results were achieved far more quickly than had been expected: before the introduction of the new system only 50% of the products supplied were invoiced for, but one year later this figure had risen to 90%.
